Virtual Reality Facility

A wonderful team of skilled engineers to make your projects come to (virtual) reality


Virtual Reality (VR) technologies give to researchers the opportunity to conduct experiments in life-like virtual scenarios, in a safe, controlled, measurable and repeatable way. Additionally, VR can be used simultaneously with other equipment from the Human Neuroscience Platform (such as EEG and fMRI).

The VR Facility team makes knowledge and expertise in the VR field accessible to all users at Campus Biotech and beyond. The VR facility provides support for the development of 3D (mainly focus on VR) content and scenarios, in collaboration with the users (mainly from academia research). A continuously growing library of developed software and technical set-ups is available, allowing faster developments of new experiments as well as on-need demos.

Co-development with research laboratories is also possible for promising and innovative projects which developments could benefit to the entire community.


Scientific supervision of the VR facility is performed by Prof. Daphné Bavelier (UNIGE), Prof. Olaf Blanke (EPFL) and Prof. Silvestro Micera (EPFL).

Margaux Dubessy, Valentin Bourdon, and Antoine Provost (VR engineers) are responsible for the facility.

Here you can have a showcase of the equipment you can use for your experiments

The "VR Studio"

This room hosts a home-made solution to perform the online and realistic representation of users using an array of depth cameras (10 Microsoft Kinect v2 cameras, each one associated to a compact NUC PC, streaming data to a powerful master computer).

The "VR Booth"

This small room equipped with a consumer Head-Mounted Display is used for simple VR experiments in seated or standing position;

The "VR Room".

This room is equipped with a camera-based motion capture system (12 Optitrack Prime 13 cameras), a 3D projection system (2 calibrated WQHD projectors), a surround sound system, several consumers head-mounted displays, and computers equipped with high-end components;

The "VR-Mocap-MRI" set-up

This set-up installed in the HNP MRI Facility includes a MRI-compatible motion capture system (6 Qualisys Oqus cameras tight to the ceiling of the MRI room) and a MRI-compatible Virtual Reality display system (Nordic NeuroLab VSHD)
